On Campus at Springfield College

Jenice Germain, Program Coordinator

New England Business Associates currently supports a select group of students through our unique "On-Our-Way" program.   The purpose of the program is to provide students with disabilities real access to a college experience.  Begun in NEBA's West Springfield office in 1994, the program subsequently moved to and is currently located at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.  It is the first of its kind in the region.  The "On-Our-Way" participants are individuals of college age from area school systems and other young adults.  Our students receive one-on-one instructions from qualified staff with college interns assisting.

An important component of "On-Our-Way" is the computer based SuccessMaker™ program.  The interactive SuccessMaker™ facilitates adult training for grades K-12 and beyond, including subjects such as Math , Reading, Science, Life Skills, as well as English as a Second Language.  The multimedia presentation is enhanced with engaging graphic and verbal prompts.  Best of all, the total experience allows the students to advance at their own pace while keeping the process extremely positive and relevant.

If you are a college student, undergrad or graduate, and enrolled in a related curriculum, please consider NEBA for your internship or practicum. Contact our Higher Ed program director Aimee Lunden at 413-821-9200, x106 or e-mail aimee.lunden@nebaworks.com.

"On-Our-Way" participants are surrounded by college students who act as mentors and coaches and are often seen on campus with other college students engaged in campus based activities, e.g., eating in the cafeteria, studying at the college library, or hanging out at the student center.  Springfield College students involved in the program are fulfilling internship and practicum requirements, while some simply have developed freely given relationships.

The benefits of a college environment are plentiful.  Among them are:

  • The person is in a valued college student role.  The positive expectation and academic setting increases his or her performance.
  • Students have a sense of belonging, as a college setting is more typical for the young adult learner.
  • Our students have the added benefit of building relationships with other college students.
  • Our students begin addressing some of the broader issues surrounding graduation from High School: work, continuing education, personal and career goals.
  • Traditional college students have the opportunity to see people with disabilities around campus, experience integration, and access to a diverse group of people.
